An initiative to upskill the homeless through the recycling of e-waste

The Global E-Waste Story

Significant volumes of e-waste is generated each year.

tonnes • Global e-waste (2022)
And generated volumes are increasing.
82M
tonnes • Projected by 2030
While recycled volumes are decreasing.
22.3%
Properly recycled

  • The world’s generation of electronic waste is rising faster than documented e-waste recycled (GEM 2024).
  • Majority of that from Asia, the Americas and Oceania.
  • Harmful materials like lead and mercury spoil landfill sites; valuable materials like gold and silver are wasted.

  • E-waste is growing 3 x times faster in SA than general solid waste.
  • South Africa is the 2nd largest producer of e-waste on the continent.
  • In August 2022, the SA government banned e-waste from landfill sites.

  • When dumped in landfill sites, hazardous substances infiltrate soil and water resources, harmful to land, man and animal.
  • This is prevented through the dismantling and responsible recycling of e-waste.
  • Where practical, e-waste can be repaired to working condition and sold as 2nd hand goods too.
  • The recovery of precious metals contained in e-waste is 10 x times more energy efficient vs customary mining practices, making it an eco-friendly alternative.

Hebron E-Waste

How it works
  • As few are involved in the recycling of e-waste, due to the labor-intensive dismantling thereof and thus costly, we established Hebron E-Waste.
  • Anything with an “on/off” switch, operated through a power plug or battery, we have interest in, regardless of size.
  • The residents of Hebron upliftment project dismantle donated e-waste, which is sold to accredited wholesale recyclers. Or are repaired and sold.
  • The proceeds are applied to upskill the Hebron residents through paid training courses or offered financial support (for example, a rental deposit).
In this manner residents are
  • Remunerated for work performed;
  • A contribution is made towards the global e-waste problem; and
  • Dignity is re-instated among Hebron residents as we support their re-integration into society as value-adding citizens.
  • The model can be replicated as we expand.
